We actually did a bit different than what you are doing . My 95 year old, disabled mother needed constant care, so we delayed our retirement, and I took care of my mother in Florida until she died in 2022. My mom also did not agree to move to Mexico because her impression of Mexico was so flawed due to her friends ideas, and she didn't listen to me about how nice Mexico really is, or how much further her social security money would last there. We had a 3/3 condo near Cuernavaca at that time and had been spending vacations in Mexico for over 20 years and planned to buy a house with a wing specifically for her, but she refused to consider it, so we stayed in Florida and continued to work until she passed away a couple of years ago. We now own a beautiful home near Cuernavaca and are living a good life with the knowledge that we took good care of my mom until the end of her days. I wish you safety and happiness in the U.S.A with hopes you may some day return to your dream.

Does 'third of the income' in Mexico mean that your wife worked and you didn't or both if you didn't work?

I had something similar happen with my father when I moved him to tax from Wisconsin. However I made the hard decision and moved him back to Wisconsin. I made the hard decision to not live my life limited by my father.

Sounds like you compromise a little too much for Linda. Moving to Mexico so she could retire too, while she hadn’t earned a public pension like u, then moving back to the US because her mother required Linda to move to her -to care for her (elderly need to move to adult children), and then re-entering the workforce to take on new debt. It doesn’t sound like Linda and her mother like compromising.

Also, a person can make a great living because they make good videos but personally are a horrible wife/husband dad/mom these are edited videos think of Hollywood it’s a product production.. But I think this guy is a great guy I’m just saying that is how video works whether it’s on the big screen at the cinema or YT..

Sorry Paul, I have been following you for many years. I have been with my wife for 15 years and she has two kids and I don't have any. We have a timeshare in Cancun and I am just in love with Cancun. Her kids moved to Las Vegas from Oregon where we are from. She wants to got there but I feel my place is in Cancun. After all the years, we are looking at divorcing because my home is in Cancun and she wants to be with her kids and grandchild. I am so sorry to see you back in the states. Maybe you should have put your foot down and told the mother in law either Mexico or you're on your own...

Hard to believe you and your wife gave up living a good life in Mexico just because her mother didn’t want to move there. You give her the ultimatum, come and live with us or you will only see us once a year. Period. If her mother loved her daughter and her daughter’s happiness she would not have allowed her (and you) to move to a shithole that the US is. No healthcare, food full of poison/chemicals, same as shampoos, meds, even clothing has toxic chemicals here. You are insane to move back after having made such good choices in Mexico. Insane! Now with Global warming being worse than ever, flooding in Florida is a monthly occurrence, flooding like INSIDE your house.

Retired, sold everything and moved to Asia. 14 years and no intention of going back to live, hard enough to go there for a 2 month visit. I definitely would never consider going back into the work force and for sure not buying a home and taking on a mortgage and especially not in Florida. The US is a disaster. I have thought about going to Mexico part time (west coast), just for the food.

Just came across your video. First, great job on taking risks to try something new and get out of our comfort zone. Second, congratulations on your semi-retirement. Third and final, you highlighted a consistent theme from ex pats that we in the US are used to debt that debt becomes our playbook to survive. My finance professor used to say everything is marketing to make money. We are consumed with making money. Do we really need a new phone every 2-3 years? Warren Buffet says we don't as he doesn't. Why don't we have better public transportation. Is it because the automotive and auto insurance industry would lose money? People in other countries seem to thrive with less material goods. I've noticed in the US that it is very expensive to eat healthy unlike outside the US where farmer's markets are the norm. There are tons of videos where ex pats get rid of prescription medication after living abroad and eating healthier; less stress and friendlier community. It would be equally great if you could somehow delve into these curiosities you posited in the comparison between living in Mexico and the US. Welcome back and looking forward to see the POV of a 50+ year old that was debt free for at least 8 years.

Wow! Paul and Linda, way to go! Eight years in an alternative life style -- I predict that the two of you will continue to research and work to continually create the freshest version of yourselves and will go on to live a long and healthy life. I recreated my own life at 70 moving west after 50 years in my beloved Manhattan but I am alone and find it not so easy to do that again without a partner. I admire the gumption of the two of you!
